Insurance for seeds and inputs 3 - the farmer

Jane G Simon, the first farmer in Kenya to buy insured maize seed through Kilimo Salama
© Syngenta Foundation
Jane Gathoni Simon was the first farmer in Kenya to buy insured maize seed under the Kilimo Salama system. She explains why she decided to buy the insurance, and how it benefitted her when drought caused a crop failure. She also describes how, before the insurance became available, she used to plant maize that was sold as food in the market. She compares the yield of the insured, certified seed that she has planted on one part of her land, with the traditional, recycled maize seed she is growing on another part.
