Soya - nutrition for people, livestock and plants

Soya bean are used as a soil fertility crop
© FAO/E.Kennedy
Josephine Ongoma, enthusiastic soya bean grower and processor, describes the benefits this high-protein crop can offer, as food for humans, animals and in boosting soil fertility. She makes and sells various soya products, including flour, roasted nuts, soya milk (which she ferments to make yoghurt) and soya meal - used as livestock feed. She has also introduced soya growing to her neighbours, and taught them how to process it.
