Bamboo, a strong raw material abundant in many areas, is ideal for constructing bicycle frames. In Kumasi, Ghana, the Bamboo Bike Project and Bamboo Bikes Ghana have established the world's first large scale bamboo bike factory, with the aim of building 750 bamboo bikes, for sale to local and international markets. If successful, the plan is to employ local youth and physically challenged people in building as many as 20,000 bamboo bikes a year. The bikes, which are cheaper than metal framed bikes, are being targeted at teachers, health workers and other public sector workers who need to travel in remote areas with poor roads.
